Trash is for Tossers

When I started composting a few years ago, it cut down the quantity of my garbage so much!  It was alarming & also brought my attention to what was left that I was throwing away.  In addition to recycling as much as possible, I started sorting my e-waste and textiles to drop off with the city for re-use.  So when I came across an article about Lauren Singer, the zero-waste advocate who has generated less than a mason jar of trash for more than two years (!) I was so inspired to meet her and get her advice on how to take it to the next level.  Watch the video of the teach-in to learn about her ideas for consumption and habit changes that make a huge positive impact on the planet. Shopping at vintage stores & making your own toothpaste are two easy examples, plus she has more inspiring tips on her blog trashisfortossers.com Thanks Lauren! You are amazing!!! Love, Erika

Getting $ out of Politics

When someone gives you money, you’re more likely to be nice to that person (or at least listen to them), right?

Politicians (aka our president and senators and everyone else) are no different!

Every election, politicians have to raise millions (and sometimes billions) of dollars so they can have enough money to run for office (spend money making TV commercials, traveling across the country on the campaign trail, hosting fundraisers, and kissing babies and all that stuff)

The big question is –  where does all the money for these politician’s campaigns come from?

Unless the candidate starts out as a billionaire, they have to get other people’s money to fund their campaign.  The question is, who are these people with millions of dollars to give to political hopefuls?

The answer is simple – super rich people and big companies (aka corporations)!

There are about 80 people on this planet who are as rich as the world’s 3.6 billion people! Not million. BILLION. And ‘lucky for the U.S.’, we have 35 of the 80 richest people in the world , with combined wealth of $941 billion in 2014. Imaging 35 people with $941 billion. I hope they dress well, at least. JK. Here is a list of them!

The thing is, when super rich people and corporations donate money to politicians like President Obama, they are usually not doing it because they majored in Political Science back in college and have a soft spot for Politics – they’re doing it because they know President Obama and the other politicians they give money to will “PAY THEM BACK…”

The thing is, the politicians usually don’t PAY THEM BACK back in dollars, but instead by making political decisions that make these rich people and the businesses/corporations they own even richer,  (ALWAYS at the expense of the environment and you and me!)

For example, even though President Obama claims to care about the environment and climate change,  he just allowed a HUGE OIL COMPANY called Shell to start drilling in the Arctic part of our beautiful planet, even though burning oil leads to climate change!

WTF, right?

Let me get this straight, President Obama tells the American people that he is concerned with climate change – but then he goes ahead and does something that totally CAUSES climate change. HMMM… Why did he make this choice?

WHAT A FUNNY COINCIDENCE!

Oh, President Obama’s bad decision might just be because Shell Oil Company gave millions of dollars to President Obama during his election! Even though the majority of people are AGAINST DRILLING, it doesn’t matter because they didn’t give Obama money!

Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 6.24.07 PM
( But who cares since they didn’t donate $$$ )

I’m sure if a Solar Power company, or even a polar bear in the middle of the Arctic handed Obama a check for a billion dollars, he would be more likely to protect the Arctic and ignore Shell’s requests. But Shell has the money, not you, me, or the polar bears….

The worst part about all of this is that there was a massive oil spill last week in California that is leaving thousands of animals and the ocean in super bad shape. But once Obama and other politicians are elected, they don’t need to care what WE THE PEOPLE need to be happy and healthy, he has to care about what the rich people who run Shell Oil and the other rich people who donated to him need to be happy. This is bad, right?

Screen Shot 2015-06-20 at 4.42.09 PM

This is just one of MANY examples of situations where politicians do what is right for only a small group of people, and ignore what actually benefits the entire United States.

If rich people and corporations give politicians money, OF COURSE politicians are going to listen to what corporations want instead of what people want! And the worst part is, a lot of these rich people ask politicians to help MAKE THEM RICHER, so there is absolutely no way for us normal people to ever be able to afford to “buy a politician.” – ARE YOU MAD? I AM!

HERE IS A GAME PLAN OF WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO MAKE POLITICIANS CARE ABOUT US AGAIN

We need to call our politicians (President, Senators, Assembly) and tell them we need to get money out of politics so they will care about us again…

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this Blog Post to learn EXACTLY WHAT TO DO to GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS so politicians can go back to caring about US and not only rich people and corporations…

A BLOGPOST ON WOLFPAC COMING SOON!

Earth Day

On Earth Day we took to the streets of the East Village to pick up trash and plant seed bombs! We gathered at the shop & made some girl scout style activism sashes, and mushroom hats, and the (heart shaped) seed bombs— made of soil, clay and native wildflower seeds! Picking up litter is fun if you’re with your friends, dressed as psychedelic mushroom girl scouts! It was fun to plant the seeds where the rubbish had been. Native plants are very important to support local butterflies and ecosystems. We made our way over to the Union Square Farmer’s Market, and perused the local organic produce as well as dropping off our compost. The farmer’s Market is a great place to take your compost. You can keep it in a bag in your freezer so it doesn’t stink up your kitchen. Going to the farmer’s market with your friends turns grocery shopping into a really fun activity (especially if you’re dressed as psychedelic mushroom girl scouts) !  Love, Tennessee
